The Building Fire Safety Regulations 2008 sets out specific criteria for an occupier or managing entity to provide fire safety management plans and instruct building occupants on;

  1. Procedure to be followed in the event of a fire
  2. Means of escape.
  3. The location and method of operation of fire fighting equipment and fire alarms and or equipment warning of fire.
  4. Procedures for conducting building visitors to an exit in the event of a fire.
  5. Procedures for persons working in building with other persons in their care or custody – i.e. conducting person to an exit, marshalling the person in a safe place and checking whether all persons are present at the safe place.
  6. Report the fact that not all persons are present at a safe place.

The Fire and Rescue Service Act 1990 (104FC) set out requirements for the fire safety management plan to contain the following;

  1.  The allowable number of occupants for the building
  2. Proposed maintenance schedule for prescribed fire safety installations
  3. The evacuation plan for evacuating the buildings occupants including those with disabilities
  4. All above occupants training requirements
  5. List of the buildings prescribed fire safety installations including brand name, and model number of each installation.
  6. Building plans in a reasonable scale identifying the location of the buildings prescribed fire safety installations.

The Australian Standard AS1851-2005 (Section 19), adopted in Queensland in 2006, sets out requirements for the inspection and testing of the critical elements of the Emergency and Evacuation Procedures:

  1. Emergency Plans
  2. Emergency Evacuation Equipment
  3. Emergency Response Procedures
  4. Training
  5. Evacuation Exercises
  6. Emergency Control Organization & Diagrams
  7. Assembly Areas
