The Building Fire Safety Regulations 2008 sets out specific criteria for an occupier or managing entity to provide fire safety management plans and instruct building occupants on;
- Procedure to be followed in the event of a fire
- Means of escape.
- The location and method of operation of fire fighting equipment and fire alarms and or equipment warning of fire.
- Procedures for conducting building visitors to an exit in the event of a fire.
- Procedures for persons working in building with other persons in their care or custody – i.e. conducting person to an exit, marshalling the person in a safe place and checking whether all persons are present at the safe place.
- Report the fact that not all persons are present at a safe place.
The Fire and Rescue Service Act 1990 (104FC) set out requirements for the fire safety management plan to contain the following;
- The allowable number of occupants for the building
- Proposed maintenance schedule for prescribed fire safety installations
- The evacuation plan for evacuating the buildings occupants including those with disabilities
- All above occupants training requirements
- List of the buildings prescribed fire safety installations including brand name, and model number of each installation.
- Building plans in a reasonable scale identifying the location of the buildings prescribed fire safety installations.
The Australian Standard AS1851-2005 (Section 19), adopted in Queensland in 2006, sets out requirements for the inspection and testing of the critical elements of the Emergency and Evacuation Procedures:

- Training
- Evacuation Exercises
- Emergency Control Organization & Diagrams
- Assembly Areas
